Coronary Angiography and Stenting
Coronary angiography and stenting is one of the most commonly performed cardiac interventions worldwide, and Turkey's cardiovascular centres at Memorial, Acıbadem, and American Hospital are renowned for their expertise and volume in these procedures. Our interventional cardiologists perform thousands of coronary interventions annually using the latest catheterisation laboratory technology, delivering outcomes that rival the best centres in Europe and North America.
Diagnostic Coronary Angiography
Coronary angiography is the definitive diagnostic procedure for evaluating coronary artery disease. Performed in a state-of-the-art catheterisation laboratory, a thin catheter is guided through the radial artery (wrist) or femoral artery (groin) to the coronary arteries. A contrast dye is injected, and high-resolution X-ray imaging reveals the exact location and severity of any blockages. The entire diagnostic procedure takes approximately 20-30 minutes and is performed under local anaesthesia with mild sedation.
Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (Stenting)
If significant blockages are identified, your cardiologist may proceed with stent placement during the same session. Using advanced drug-eluting stents (DES) coated with medication that prevents re-narrowing, the blocked artery is opened and reinforced. Our centres utilise intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) and optical coherence tomography (OCT) for precise stent sizing and placement, ensuring optimal results. We stock the latest generation of stents from leading manufacturers including Medtronic, Abbott, and Boston Scientific.
Recovery and Follow-Up
Most patients who undergo radial-access angiography and stenting are discharged within 24 hours. You will receive detailed instructions on dual antiplatelet therapy, activity guidelines, and cardiac rehabilitation. Our team arranges a follow-up consultation within 48 hours of discharge and coordinates long-term monitoring with your local cardiologist to ensure continuity of care.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is coronary angiography painful?
The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia with mild sedation, so you will feel minimal discomfort. Most patients report only a brief sensation of pressure when the catheter is inserted. The radial (wrist) approach, which we prefer, further reduces discomfort and allows you to sit up immediately after the procedure.
How long do I need to stay in Turkey after stent placement?
Most patients are discharged within 24 hours of the procedure. We recommend staying in Turkey for 3-5 days after stenting to allow for an initial recovery period, follow-up blood tests, and a post-procedure consultation with your cardiologist before travelling home.
How long do drug-eluting stents last?
Modern drug-eluting stents are designed to be permanent implants. The re-narrowing (restenosis) rate with current-generation stents is less than 5% at 5 years. You will need to take dual antiplatelet medication (typically aspirin and clopidogrel) for 6-12 months after the procedure to prevent blood clots.
